Our method

Nobody paid to be here.

Not one product on this list bought its place. The engine reads the same criteria for every one of them, and what it hands back is the part of your trip you were dreading: the hour in the aisle, spent already.

A gate, not a shelf. Most K-beauty lists are a shelf someone was paid to arrange. Ours starts with a fixed rating and a sponsor-screened review floor, set per retailer, and only then do we read the label.

  • 7,226taken off the shelf
  • 3,411labels read
  • 1,556cleared the bar

No paid placements. Not now, not at launch. Nobody bought a place in the list.

The price

Why is Korean skincare so cheap?

Because of how the industry is built, and none of it is secret. Korean brands mostly do not own factories: contract manufacturers like Cosmax, Kolmar Korea and Cosmecca develop the formula as well as fill the bottle, so a brand rents research and production instead of buying them. That is why a launch can start at around a thousand units and go from brief to shelf in under six months, where a Western legacy product takes years. And it happens in a home market where the number of registered brand owners roughly doubled in five years. The result is a tier priced from the start to land near $10–$20, not a discount off some truer price. Two qualifiers, because they usually get dropped. This describes a tier, not a country: Korea sells prestige lines at prestige prices too. And a Korean shelf price is not what you pay abroad, where shipping, a distributor's margin and import duty go on top. US duty on Korean cosmetics went from zero to not-zero in 2025 and has been repriced since. For a shopper all of that adds up to one narrow, useful thing: here, cheap is ordinary rather than suspicious, which makes price a weak signal about quality in either direction. So the screen does not read price as a grade. It reads the ingredient list and the formulation, and where it does read price it reads it against the budget you set. Being cheap earns a product nothing on its own, and a price is only marked down as it climbs toward the ceiling you chose. Measured against our own catalogue, the cheapest 8-row plan that still clears the screen comes out around ₩12,000 a product. That is the floor, not the target. And the screen drops an inexpensive product that does not suit you as readily as it keeps an expensive one that does.

  1. 01

Korean reviews, weighed by how many

We read Olive Young and Musinsa reviews for the rating and the count together. When two products have the same share of good reviews, the one more people reviewed scores higher.

  2. 02

    Paid-for reviews only, no freebies

Reviews written in exchange for free product are almost always generous, so we leave them out. A product sold at Olive Young needs at least 300 reviews from people who paid for it before it can come in. Department-store brands that publish no reviews are checked by Scelto by hand, one at a time.

  3. 03

Ingredient design, not the front of the box

The claim on the front is marketing. The ingredient order on the back is the formulation. We read that, and we read it against who the product is for. The order, never a percentage: Korean labels do not print concentrations, so every strength judgement we make is a conservative presence-based proxy rather than a dose. Where a department-store line lists fragrance, the plan prints "Contains fragrance" on that row rather than dropping the product, and drops it outright for anyone whose answers say fragrance is a problem for them.

  4. 04

No paid placement, at any point

No brand has bought a place in this list, and none can. That is the reason the other three checks are worth anything.

How we're paid

Brands can't pay to be here.

Revenue
Plans, bought one at a time. That is the main line, and it comes from readers.
Also
Retailer links: attached after the picks are locked, so no link has ever changed a decision.
Never
Sponsored placements, paid rankings, gifted-product reviews, or a brand seat at the table.

Why this exists

I research obsessively before I buy anything. A pair of headphones takes me a fortnight. Cosmetics were the first category that exhausted even me. A single moisturizer can list forty ingredients, and the routine around it wants nine steps before you have any idea which of them is doing the work.

For a traveler who doesn't read Korean, that overwhelm is five times worse. You're standing in a store with five thousand products, a screenshot folder, and a shop assistant who is being kind and is also being paid.

So I built the list I always wanted: a few products that fit my skin right now, chosen from everything out there, with the reason for each one written down. That's the whole service. I'm its first customer.

FAQ

What should I buy at Olive Young?

That depends on your skin, which is exactly what a generic must-buy list cannot know. Answer the questionnaire and the engine builds you a personalized shopping list instead: 8 picks across the categories a face routine actually needs, each with a backup that cleared the same screen, inside a budget you set before you fly, with the Korean product names to show a shop assistant.

Why should I trust this?

Every product is screened on ingredients, formulation and price against the budget you set before it can enter a plan. Before we read a label at all it has to clear a fixed rating and a sponsor-screened review floor, set per retailer, because a shelf of a thousand reviews and a counter of thirty are not the same evidence. Reviews flagged as sponsored are not counted towards it. No brand can pay to be included, ranked, or kept in.

Can I use this if I am buying online instead of going to Korea?

Yes. The part of the plan that does the work (the picks, the backup behind each one, the reason each was chosen, the budget line and the Korean product names) reads the same whether you are standing in a store in Seoul or typing the name into Olive Young Global. What is trip-specific is the store guidance, and that is a section you can skip. We do not sell, ship or stock anything, so we cannot speak for any retailer on price, shipping or customs. The list itself, though, does not need a boarding pass.

What is a K-beauty shopping list?

It is what a folder of screenshots becomes once somebody has done the elimination for you: not fifty things that went viral, but a short ordered list you can walk in and buy from. Ours names one product per category, a backup behind each, the order you use them morning and evening, and what the whole basket costs.

What if something's sold out?

Every slot in your shopping list carries an alternate that cleared the exact same screen. If the Olive Young shelf is empty, you open the plan and buy the backup instead of guessing in the aisle.

How are the picks chosen for my skin?

Your answers set the filters; the screen sets the pool. A product only becomes a candidate after it clears the rating and sponsor-screened review thresholds, and it is then read on ingredients, formulation and price against the budget you set. Out of what survives that, your profile (skin type, concerns, anything the safety screen flagged, and the budget you set) decides which product takes each slot and which one waits behind it. No brand can pay to change that order.

Why can a product with lots of reviews still be left out?

Review count is only the first gate. We remove sponsored and gifted reviews and count only genuine buyers. Then we check for a rating of 4.7 or higher, no more than 10% one- and two-star reviews, and no more than 8% mentioning stinging or redness. A product on the shelf can still leave your plan because of your answers: an ingredient you react to, something to avoid while pregnant or nursing, your per-item budget, your sensitivity, or a sunscreen that leaves a white cast on your tone.

Why isn't a viral product in my plan?

Buzz does not count. We do not read mentions, views or rankings. A product scores on how genuine buyers rate it and on how well it fits your skin. A viral product usually drops out because it falls short once gifted reviews are removed, or because it does not suit your skin.

The ingredients look good. Why wasn't it picked?

Your plan holds one product per category, 8 in all, so a good product can lose its slot to a closer fit. It also has to fit your budget and the texture and finish you asked for. An ingredient only counts when it sits in the first 10 on the label. We also cap strong actives per plan (1 for sensitive skin).

Two products look alike. How do you choose?

The one that fits your skin better wins. If the scores are equal, the one with more genuine reviews wins, then the cheaper one, then a fixed order. Nothing is random, so the same answers always give the same plan.

How is dehydrated oily skin different from combination skin?

Both look shiny, for different reasons. Combination skin makes different amounts of oil in different places: an oily T-zone, with cheeks that feel normal or dry. It is closer to the skin type you were born with. Dehydrated oily skin is shiny all over on the surface but short on water underneath, so it feels tight after washing or flakes. It can come from over-cleansing or harsh ingredients, and it can improve with care. Our questionnaire tells them apart with a question about your cheeks.

Are moisture and the skin barrier the same thing?

Not the same, but they usually move together. Moisture is how much water the outer layer of your skin holds; the barrier is what keeps that water from escaping. When the barrier is weak, water keeps leaking out and your skin runs short of it. A damaged barrier is the most common reason skin is dehydrated. A weak barrier also lets irritants in more easily, so stinging or redness can increase too.

What happens to the health questions?

By default they stay on your device: the safety screen switches your plan to gentler, barrier-first picks, and that calculation runs in your browser. The screen carries its own consent box, separate from the email one. Leave it unticked and nothing from it is ever sent. Tick it and we store just the category names you selected, so your plan can exclude exactly the ingredients that matter. Never the sentence you typed, only the ingredient names your browser matched out of it.

What are the pregnancy filters based on?

Published guidance from medical bodies: ACOG, the NHS and the EMA. Korean cosmetics law has no official list of ingredients to avoid while pregnant, so we follow that international guidance and err on the side of exclusion: when we cannot identify an ingredient, we hold the product back rather than guess. This is a screen, not medical advice. Your doctor has the final word.

How do you make money, then?

Plans, and retailer links attached after the picks are locked. Nobody pays to be picked, and no link can change what the screen decided.

What are the product links on my plan? Are they ads?

If you are buying online, each pick carries a link straight to a shop that sells it, so you are not retyping a Korean product name into a search box. Some of those are affiliate links: buy through one and the shop pays us a commission, and that is part of how we are paid. Why it is still not advertising: the links go on last, after the plan is locked. The engine that chose your picks never sees them; at the moment it decides, they do not exist yet. So a commission has never changed a pick. That is an order of operations, not a promise about our character.
